Refrigerators need more than the occasional wipe-down. Food residue and spills accumulate in a cold, enclosed space that can hold onto odors and grime longer than most other kitchen surfaces.
Removing everything gives you full access to shelves and drawers, and it's the natural time to check expiration dates and clear out anything that's gone bad — which is often part of what's actually causing lingering odors.
Most glass shelves and plastic drawers can be taken out and washed in warm soapy water, which reaches spilled residue far better than wiping them in place. Let glass shelves come closer to room temperature before washing to avoid thermal shock cracking.
The door gasket and interior walls trap spilled residue in the grooves and folds. A soft brush or old toothbrush works into these crevices more effectively than a cloth alone.
The exterior gets wiped often, but the condenser coils (usually behind or underneath the unit) collect dust that can affect efficiency over time. Checking your model's manual for coil location and cleaning them periodically keeps the appliance running the way it should.
Interior deep cleans are available as part of our deep cleaning service.
