These three words get used interchangeably, but they describe different things. Knowing the difference helps you pick the right approach for the right surface.
Cleaning is the physical removal of dirt, dust, crumbs, and other visible debris from a surface, typically with soap or detergent and water. It doesn't necessarily kill germs, but removing them physically along with the dirt does reduce their numbers on the surface.
Sanitizing lowers the number of germs on a surface to a level considered safe by public health standards, without necessarily eliminating every last one. It's a middle step between cleaning and disinfecting, often used on food-contact surfaces.
Disinfecting uses chemicals to kill germs on surfaces, including many that sanitizing doesn't address. It's typically reserved for high-touch surfaces or situations where illness is a specific concern, since disinfectants are stronger products than everyday cleaners.
Disinfectants generally work best on a surface that's already been cleaned — dirt and grime can shield germs from a disinfectant's effectiveness. That's why a proper deep clean, not just a spray-and-wipe, matters even when disinfecting is the end goal.
A proper clean is the foundation everything else builds on.
