Fresh stains are almost always easier to handle than ones that have set in. A few general principles apply across most spills, plus a couple of cautions worth knowing before you reach for a home remedy.
Rubbing a fresh spill tends to push it deeper into carpet fibers and can spread it over a wider area. Blotting from the outside of the stain toward the center, with a clean cloth or paper towel, lifts more of the spill out instead of grinding it in.
For food and drink spills, blotting with cold water is a safe first step for most carpet types — hot water can set certain stains (particularly protein-based ones, like blood or dairy) by helping them bind to the fibers.
Carpet fibers and dyes vary a lot by material and manufacturer. Before applying any cleaning solution to a visible stain, test it on a hidden patch of the same carpet — inside a closet or under furniture — and check after a few minutes for any discoloration or texture change.
Set-in stains, large spills, or anything on a delicate or specialty carpet are usually better handled by a professional with the right equipment and products — attempting an aggressive home remedy on those can sometimes make the stain more permanent, not less.
Our deep cleaning service can tackle carpets along with the rest of your home.
